ForgotIt? is a password reminder that uses strong Blowfish encryption to encrypt multiple password documents with a masterkey of your choice. Instead of remembering dozens of passwords, you only have to remember one masterkey and can look up the other passwords using ForgotIt?.
1. Installation & Installation Requirements
Requirements: Mac OS 7.1 or higher (OS 8 recommended) and the InternetConfig extension, 2 MB free RAM
To install ForgotIt? simply copy the folder to your harddisk. You may place the program anywhere you like, but to automatically launch the accompanied Register application, it must be in the same folder as your copy of ForgotIt?.
2. How to use ForgotIt?
Double-click on the application icon to launch it. If you start ForgotIt? the first time, a new untitled document window will open. If you already have used the application it will prompt for a password file instead.
The password list window
In the document window, you can press the New button (-N) to enter a new password entry.
Use the Delete button (-D) in the main dialog to delete a selected item in the password list. To view or edit selected items in the list, press return or the View button (-E). Once you save the list by choosing Save (-S), you will be prompted to enter a master passphrase. Please note that a longer passphrase will be more secure than a short one. You can always change the passphrase of an existing, opened password list by choosing Set Password from the Edit menu. On saving your password list will be encrypted using the 560-bit Blowfish encryption standard. Please keep in mind that I cannot help you if you have forgotten or lost your master passphrase. Blowfish is a strong encryption standard and there is absolutely NO WAY for me to decrypt your password list without the correct master passphrase! Do not email me asking me to decipher a password list! I wouldn’t do it even if I could, but I can’t anyway...
If you already have opened a password list and want to create a new, empty list, choose New (-shift-N) from the File menu. To open an existing passphrase, double-click on its icon or choose Open (-O) from the File menu. Use Save (-S) in the File menu to save the list (if you quit the application without having all password lists saved you will be asked first). To save a copy of the topmost password list under a different name, you may choose Save As... from the File menu.
If somebody, say your boss, suddenly wanders by or appears behind your back to take a quick look at your password lists while you’re working, you may want to press -H to hide all open windows immediately. Choosing Show All or pressing -H again will show all windows again after your boss has gone fishing.
The view & edit window
In the password edit / view dialog, the first field is for entering a name for the entry. Below, you see a panel with a Login (-1), a Password (-2), an URL (-3) and an Info (-4) field. Select any of these fields to view or change the data. In the URL field you may enter a Uniform Resource Locator like http://www.snafu.de/~erich/shareware/forgotit.html that will get launched if you select Launch URLs (-L) form the File menu.
The text on the bottom indicates when the entry has been created or when it was modified the last time. If you close the password view window (-W), your password entry gets appended to the password list in the main window or the selected entry in the main window gets updated automatically.
3. How to register?
ForgotIt? is $15 shareware. I have spent much time writing this application, so please register if you find this program useful and continually use it. There are two ways to register both of which usually take about 10 minutes of your time.
Online-Registration: Launch your favorite Web-browser and go to:
http://order.kagi.com/?UCV
Using the Register application: Launch the Register application that came with your copy of ForgotIt? A dialog box will open letting you edit how many copies you’d like to order and which payment methods to use. Current payment methods include most Credit Cards available and payment by Check/Money Order.
After Kagi has received your payment, you will get an email with your personal registration code. You can enter your registration code in the About menu to personalize your copy of ForgotIt? and remove the annoying shareware reminder screen. As a registered user you will benefit from free upgrades and other goodies as well.
